COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- A&M Consolidated's Frankie Colunga and Franklin's Carrie Casey will be the lone Brazos Valley representatives in state championship tennis matches Tuesday morning.
Colunga knocked off Patrick Domanski of New Braunfels 6-4, 6-2 in the 5A boys singles quarterfinals in Austin Monday morning, then beat Dane Esses of Houston Memorial 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals. He will face Miguel Alda from Round Rock in the championship match Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Casey advances to the 2A girls championship match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kristen McGehee from Falfurrias in the quarterfinals and a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Florence's Tristen Brunson in the semis. Casey will take on Jaycie Talbot from Rogers in the finals Tuesday morning at nine at the Mitchell Tennis Center at Texas A&M.
Bellville and Lexington had teams bow out in semifinal action Monday. In 3A girls doubles the Brahmanettes Amanda Mueller and Jenna Jackson beat Longview Spring Hill's Amy Miley and Lydia Wallis 0-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3, but fell to Abilene Wylie's Shelby Corn and Brittany Smyser 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals. Lexington's mixed doubles team of Eriq Mitchell and Mackenzie Brown eliminated Nick Schalla and Carli Bartell from Ingram Moore in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-2, but fell to Wall's Brady Clark and Bobbi Chitsey 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the semis.
College Station's Nick Bradham lost in the quarterfinals 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 to Sean Jackson from Iowa Park. Cougars Rohen Sukkawala and Kyle Miller also fell in the quarterfinals of boys doubles, losing to Jake Johnson and Zach Ripple of Krum 7-6 (5), 5-2.
Also in 3A Groesbeck's mixed doubles duo of Andrew Cook and Caitlyn Harlan fell in the quarterfinals to Adam Copps and Tatiana Bujnoch from Boerne 6-3, 6-1.
Franklin's Brent Wallingford lost in 2A boys singles quarterfinal play to Whitesboro's Jamison Burch 6-3, 6-3.
