NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Texas A&M senior Mel Dumezich was selected by the Chicago Bandits as the 15th overall pick in the 2013 National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) Draft on Monday night.
“It’s an honor to continue my career in softball and to play for a great organization like the Chicago Bandits,” Dumezich said. “I want to thank my coaches and my teammates – without them, I wouldn’t be able to take the next step and to have the success I’ve had at A&M. I also want to thank the Bandits’ owner Bill Sokolis for drafting me and for giving me this opportunity. I’m looking forward to doing what I love so close to where I grew up and learned to play the game.”
Dumezich was the fifth pick of the night by the Bandits and will join familiar faces in Jolene Henderson (California), Michelle Gascoigne (Oklahoma), Maggie Hull (Kansas), Raven Chavanne (Tennessee) and Jenna Marston (Missouri) on the rookie roster.
The Whiting, Ind., native is a two-time All-American at A&M as both the Aggies’ ace and a leader at the plate and in the infield. The triple threat has notched three no-hitters, 32 solo shutouts, a 1.97 ERA, a 96-31 record, 159 appearances and 863 strikeouts from the circle in her career in the Maroon and White. Dumezich is also putting up big career numbers at the plate, with 148 hits, 97 runs, 134 RBI, 24 doubles and 45 home runs in the past three-plus years.
“I'm excited for Mel,” A&M Head Coach Jo Evans said. “Mel loves to play the game and she will be a great complement to the other Bandits pitchers. I know her preference was to play in Chicago, 20 minutes from her home, with the opportunity for her family and friends to be in the stands to support her. Mel has earned this opportunity. Her hard work, passion for the game, and her ability to inspire her teammates make her a perfect choice for the Chicago Bandits.”
The Bandits are two-time NPF Champions and have had several greats on the roster, including Monica Abbott, and Jennie Finch and Stacy May, who retired from professional softball after several years with the ball club. The team will open the 2013 season at home against the Akron Racers on June 5. To learn more about the organization, go to ChicagoBandits.com.
Dumezich will continue her final season with the Aggies this weekend in a three-game, non-conference series against Colorado State at the Aggie Softball Complex. For more information on Texas A&M softball, log on to AggieAthletics.com and follow @AggieSoftball on Twitter.
