PITTSBURGH, PA— Texas A&M’s Jeremy Efferding and Shane Vinsant both advanced to the semifinals of the PNC Men’s Futures of Pittsburgh Singles Main Draw.
Efferding has taken down the No. 7 and No. 4 seeds to earn his place. Friday, Efferding disposed of No. 4 seed Keith-Patrick Crowley, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. In the second round, Efferding defeated No. 7 seed Jorge Montero, 6-1, 7-5.
Efferding, from Boca Raton, Florida, will be a junior in 2013-14 for the Texas A&M tennis team. The righthander defeated Patrick Daciek in the first round, 6-4, 6-3.
Efferding, an All-SEC first-team selection for his play this past spring, also became the first male Aggie tennis player to knock off the country’s top-ranked collegiate player when Efferding downed Virginia’s Alex Domijan, 6-3, 7-6 (4) back on March 13 in a match played in College Station. Efferding was ranked No. 52 at the time of the match and finished the year ranked No. 23 in the final ITA singles rankings.
Efferding will face Jason Tahir in the semifinal match.
Vinsant, from Keller, Texas, burst upon the scene as a true freshman to be named to the All-SEC Freshman squad as well as earning overall All-SEC second-team accolades. Vinsant ended the season ranked No. 83 in the final ITA rankings.
On Friday, Vinsant took out Marcos Giron, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Giron played at the No. 2 line for the 2013 NCAA runner-up UCLA Bruins. In the second round, Vinsant defeated Joel Kielbowicz, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2.
In his first-round match in Pittsburgh, Vinsant survived a hard-fought match, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (5) against Canada’s Robert Rotaru.
Vinsant faces No. 3 seed Michael Shabaz in his semifinal match.
