Sam Houston baseball travels to Nacogdoches to take on Stephen F. Austin for the first road conference series of the season. Both teams are 2-1 after one weekend of Southland play.
The Bearkats (13-11, 2-1) are coming off of a 9-3 win over No. 18 Rice in the midweek and a series win over A&M-Corpus Christi last weekend. SHSU swept the regular season home-and-home with Rice.
SFA (11-13, 2-1) lost 10-4 to Arkansas-Little Rock in the midweek after taking two-of-three from Nicholls State in the conference-opening series.
“Once you get into league play, every weekend is a dog fight,” said Bearkat coach David Pierce. “Teams have the maximum amount of information on you and their pitching staffs are prepared. Every game has tons of meaning. We’re looking forward to the challenge.”

The Bearkats and Lumberjacks are tied for second in the league in team hitting with a .288 average. SFA has hit a league-leading 17 homeruns.
Shortstop Carter Burgess leads the Bearkats with a .365 average and is second on the team with eight extra-base hits. The sophomore has 12 runs scored and 15 RBI.
Jessie Plumlee is batting .341 after missing a week because of injury. The senior has started 13 games this season as the second baseman or catcher.
Catcher Anthony Azar is hitting .295 and leads the team with 18 RBI and nine extra-base hits. The junior hit an RBI triple against Rice Tuesday, his first three-bagger of the season.
SFA left fielder Ricardo Sanchez leads the team in hitting with a .437 batting average. Shortstop Hunter Dozier leads the Jacks in most other hitting categories. Dozier is batting .419 with team-high 20 runs scored and 20 RBI. Half of Dozier’s 36 hits are for extra-bases with 13 doubles and 5 homeruns.
The series continues Friday at 6:30 p.m. and concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
