Timothy Flanders of Sam Houston State has been named as Southland Conference football "offensive player-of-the-week" after scoring four touchdowns and rushing for 131 yards in a 56-7 victory at Lamar Saturday.
Flanders scored on runs of seven, one, 59 and 10 yards as he produced his 20th career 100-yard rushing performance. His four touchdowns were one short of school record five Flanders totaled in win over New Mexico last year.
The 59-yard touchdown run in the second half was the third longest of Flanders' career and marked his seventh TD run of more than 50 yards.
Saturday's performance moved Flanders up to No. 3 in Southland career rush touchdowns (47) and total TDs (50) and No. 6 in Southland all-time rushing yards (3,395).
Flanders won "offensive player of the week" honors three times during Sam Houston's 14-0 run to the Southland title and the NCAA Division I national championship game in 2011. He earned the honor after victories of New Mexico, McNeese State and Texas State.
The award makes the junior running back from Midwest City, Oklahoma, the seventh Bearkat to earn a Southland football weekly honor this season.
Brian Bell (SFA) and Richard Sincere (McNeese) won "offensive" awards earlier this year. Matt Foster (SFA) was a special teams winner. Bookie Sneed (SFA), Jesse Beauchamp (Nicholls) and J. T. Cleveland (McNeese) have been defensive award selections for the Bearkats.
Sam Houston State plays host to Southeastern Louisiana in the Bearkats' final regular season home game at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets for the SHSU-Southeastern La. Game and for SHSU's regular season finale at Texas A&M Nov. 17 are available now online at www.gobearkats.com/tickets .
