Texas-San Antonio catcher John Bormann hit two home runs and drove in five runs to lead the Roadrunners to a 9-2 win over No. 18 Sam Houston State. The Bearkats will look to rebound on the road this weekend for a three-game series at New Orleans.
UTSA scored two runs in the first inning and it didn’t get any better for SHSU from there. The Kats committed two errors in the frame and the Roadrunners ripped three extra-base hits.
Bearkat pitching gave up three more runs in the third inning, two in the fifth and one each in the seventh and eighth innings.
Ryan Brinley started and pitched just 2 2/3 innings allowing five runs on seven hits. Logan Boyd relieved Brinley and tossed 2 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits.
SHSU scored a run in the fifth inning when Colt Atwood singled to center field scoring designated hitter Dalton Perry from first base when the ball got past the center fielder. The other Kat run came in the seventh on an RBI-single by catcher Anthony Azar.
Alex Bisacca and Cole Foster each made their Bearkat debuts on the mound. Bisacca allowed one unearned run while Foster kept UTSA off the board.
The next eight games for SHSU will be on the road starting this weekend at UNO. Next Tuesday the Bearkats are at Texas-Arlington and then head to Central Arkansas for three-games over the weekend. The road trip closes at Texas A&M Tuesday, March 25.
