FORT WORTH, Texas Texas A&M went a combined 14-3 in singles and doubles today as the Aggies began competition in the women’s ITA/USTA Texas Regional Championships at Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus.
A&M went 11-1 in singles, advancing six of eight players to the round of 32, which begins Friday at 10:30 a.m. All five A&M players competing in the 128-player first round picked up wins to advance to the second round. The Aggies then got six wins in the second round to advance to Friday’s round of 32.
Aggie freshman Jana McCord posted two straight-set victories, defeating No. 17 seed Pippa Horn of Texas, 7-5, 6-2, in the first round and defeating Kaysie Hersdorf of Abilene Christian, 6-3, 7-6, in the round of 64.
Freshman Rutaja Bhosale, a No. 17 seed in singles, also picked up two victories for the Aggies, defeating Micah Hermsdorf of Abilene Christian and notching a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Macie Elliott of SMU in the second round to advance.
Sophomore Paula Deheza, competing for the first time this fall, opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Didi Fatchikova of Texas-Pan American and followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Liat Zimmerman of Rice in the second round.
Freshmen Mason Strickland and Saska Gavrilovska also got first-round victories but were unable to advance. Strickland defeated Sarah Savedra of Incarnate Word, 6-1, 6-1, but fell in the second round, 6-1, 6-1, to No. 7 seed Kenna Kilgo of Texas Tech. Gavrilovska withdrew with an injury following her first round 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 17 seed Angeles De Los Rios of UTA.
Sophomores Anna Mamalat and Stefania Hristov, as well as senior Cristina Stancu all received first-round byes and then picked up second-round victories to advance to Friday’s round of 32. Mamalat downed Nada Marjanovic of Abilene Christian, 6-0, 6-2, and Hristov defeated Sam Czarnika of Texas Tech, 6-4, 6-1.
Stancu, the No. 2 seed, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Carolina Maso of Lamar in the round of 64 to advance.
Seeded No. 1 in the 64-team doubles draw, Stancu and Hristov raced to an 8-1 victory over Jane Stewart and Solo Zinko of Rice after receiving a bye in the first round.
Bhosale and Mamalat, the No. 9 seed, had a first-round bye and then defeated Imke Jagau and Kayla Stevenson of Sam Houston State, 8-3 in the second round to advance to the round of 16.
Gavrilovska and McCord teamed to get an 8-5 victory over Bella Costa and Natalie Petaia of Sam Houston State in the first round of doubles but bell to No. 6 seed Natalie Beazant and Liat Zimmermann of Rice, 8-1 in the second round.
Deheza and Strickland were unable to advance after suffering a narrow 8-7 setback to Anna Kate Anderson and Yana Erkeeva of SMU in the first round.
The regional features some of the top players from across the state, with the winners advancing to face other regional winners across the country at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, Nov. 7-10 in Flushing, N.Y. Stancu has already earned a berth in singles at the national indoor championships after reaching the semifinals at the prestigious Riviera/ITA All-American Championships earlier this month in California.
