HUNTSVILLE, Texas Incarnate Word put the first blemish on Sam Houston State’s Southland Conference record, defeating the Bearkats 25-15 25-20 18-25 25-27 15-13 Thursday night in San Antonio.
Deveney Wells-Gibson led the Kats with 21 kills while Lauren Bohlen added 13. Shaina Garza was UIW’s top offensive weapon with 18 kills.
Sam Houston entered the match with a 6-0 league mark, tied for first place with Central Arkansas. The loss dropped the Kats’ season record to 9-7.
Incarnate Word stands 8-8 for the year and 3-4 in conference play.
The Cardinals charged out of the gate quickly, jumping out to an early 9-6 lead and never trailing in the first set. The second frame was closer, with the two teams tied at 16-16. But UIW finished with a 9-4 run to take a two sets to none lead at the intermission.
Sam Houston battled back to win the third set and faced two match points in the fourth before winning 27-25.
The Kats held an early lead in the fifth and were tied 6-6 before UIW finished off the contest with a 9-7 run.
The Sam Houston defense posted 10 blocks with Haley Neisler participating in all 10 (one solo block, nine assists).
Tayler Gray assisted on 46 of Sam Houston’s 53 kills and totaled 30 digs.
Sam Houston State continues its Southland road trip with a match Saturday afternoon at Abilene Christian.
