“I am delighted to have Jackie Sherrill as our honoree for the 2012 Vic Schaefer Coaches of Character Golf Classic benefitting The HOPE Pregnancy Center,” Schaefer said. “We all know the profound impact he made during his coaching career at Mississippi State and Texas A&M.
“He continues to impact young lives through his charity work, especially with the 12th Man Kick-Off Team Foundation. He made a great impact on me two years ago during my son Logan’s battle following a wakeboarding injury, and his generosity toward my family is something I will forever cherish and be grateful for.”
Sherrill is a legend in the college football coaching ranks. Last August he was inducted into the Mississippi State University Sports Hall of Fame to go along with his inclusion in the Texas A&M and University of Pittsburgh shrines. He has also been selected to the Cotton, Gator and Independence Bowl halls of fame.
He coached the Bulldogs from 1991-2003, compiling a program-most 75 victories and taking six of his teams to bowl games.
Sherrill guided MSU to the SEC championship game in 1998, and his squads won 33 games over a stretch from 1997-2000.
He coached the Aggies from 1982-88, compiling a .648 winning percentage that is fourth-best in school annals.
In his seven seasons in College Station, Sherrill took Texas A&M to three SWC championships and a trio of Cotton Bowl appearances.
Schaefer begins his first season with Mississippi State following a tremendous nine-year career at Texas A&M that saw him help the team to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2011 national title, a Big 12 championship and two Big 12 Conference Tournament titles.

This year’s Coaches of Character Golf Classic benefitting The HOPE Pregnancy Center will be the second bearing Schaefer’s name. The event recognizes coaches “who consistently exhibit Christian values to their athletes and families.”
