An historic season came to end Saturday as the Bearkats lost 72-66 to Oral Roberts in the Southland Conference Tournament championship game.
The two teams tied for the Southland Conference regular season championship. The Kats won their first title and played in their first Southland tournament final.
“We went out and fought hard,” “Our girls battled and did everything we asked them to do today. I think we learned a lot today about how to win in tournament time.”
Sequeena Thomas was named to the all-tournament team after scoring 18 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. The senior registered her 53rd career double-double.
Sophomore Angela Beadle was also named to the all-tournament team. Beadle scored 19 points and pulled down nine boards in the semifinal game. She grabbed 11 boards and scored four points in the final.
Britni Martin scored 15 points and Chanice Smith added 13.
Oral Roberts was led by tournament most valuable player Kevi Luper. The senior scored 26 points and shot 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. Jaci Bigham scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds.
“When we got hired seven years ago we knew we were going to have to roll up our sleeves and work,” Nichols said. “It’s taken a lot of hard work to get this program where it is now and this senior class was a big part of turning this program around.”
The Bearkats will be hoping for a bid to the Women’s NIT postseason tournament. The selections will be announced Monday, March 18.
