Kats pull away late for 77-70 win

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Kaheem Ransom scored 21 points to lead the Sam Houston men’s basketball team to a 77-70 win over New Orleans. Ransom had a great road trip, scoring 22 against Southeastern Louisiana Thursday night.

The Bearkats are now 5-1 in Southland play and tied for second in the league standings with A&M-Corpus Christi, who they will host January 30.

Sam Houston trailed New Orleans, 56-55, with 6:56 left in the game before going on a 10-0 run. The Bearkats would lead the rest of the way.

The game remained close most of the way and there were 14 lead changes. New Orleans led by as much as seven in the first half but the largest lead of the game was the Kats’ 12 late in the second half.

Jabari Peters, Michael Holyfield and Dakarai Henderson each scored 10 points. Paul Baxter scored nine points on three big three-pointers in the final eight minutes of the game after sitting most of the first half.

For the second straight game the Kats shot better than 50%, going 52% from the field against New Orleans.

Four Privateers scored in double digits, led by Tradarri McPhearson’s 16 points. Cory Dixon, Isaac Mack and Kevin Hill each scored 10 points.

The Bearkat men, riding a four-game winning streak, continue their two-week road swing as they travel to Incarnate Word in San Antonio Thursday and Abilene Christian Saturday.
