Sam Houston looks to keep its three-game women’s basketball winning streak going Thursday when the Kats take the floor against Incarnate Word at 5:30 p.m.
The Bearkats have beaten Nicholls 51-50, Southeastern Louisiana 86-85 in overtime and New Orleans 78-47 in their last three outings.
The first two wins were nail-biters with senior guard Jasmine Johnson providing the 11th hour magic in both contests. Johnson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer earn the victory over the Colonels. She hit a three to force overtime at Southeastern Louisiana, then sank the winning free throw with a second left on the clock in the extra period.
Junior post player Angela Beadle earned Southland Conference Women’s Basketball “Player of the Week” honors after scoring a career high 34 points in the victory over the Lions. Beadle leads the Bearkats with 15.4 points per game. She is the Southland’s top rebounder, averaging 9.8 boards per contest.
Johnson is Sam Houston’s second-leading scorer with a 12.8 per game average.
The Sam Houston women stand in eighth place in the league with their 3-3 conference mark. SHSU is 8-9 for the year. Incarnate Word brings an 8-8 season mark and 2-2 Southland record into the tilt.
UIW has three players averaging in double figures – Rose Whitehead (14.4), Joslinn Douglas (10.7) and Ify Mora (10.5). Mora ranks as the program’s 10th all-time leading scorer with 1,034 career points.
KHVL 104.7 FM the Hits will broadcast the game live Thursday.
Sam Houston plays Saturday afternoon at Abilene Christian before returning home to Johnson Coliseum to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday, Jan. 30.
