INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- Alexis Klegou, a senior co-captain on the Texas A&M men’s tennis team, has been selected as one of 64 singles players to compete in the 2012 NCAA Division I Tenns Championships by the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Subcommittee.

“I am very happy for Gou (Klegou),” Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. “He has been the consummate leader and team player. He is always doing what is best for his teammates and the team. Gou has been a clutch performer for us the last few years winning so many big matches. He loves this team and Texas A&M. I can’t thank him enough for his contributions. I think he is capable of having a great NCAA Tournament. His selection is well deserved.”

The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga., following the conclusion of the team championship (May 18-22). The University of Georgia will serve as host.

All matches shall be the best of three sets. Regular scoring and a 12-point tiebreaker at six games all will be used for all matches.
Klegou, from Dunkerque, France, has played the majority of the season at No. 1 singles for Texas A&M. The Aggies advanced as a team to the NCAA Championships as an at-large selection and will open first round play next weekend in Los Angeles against the University of South Carolina. The Aggies and Gamecocks are paired with top-ranked Southern California and Fairfield in the second round at the host USC site.

Known around the Mitchell Tennis Center as “Gou”, the righthander is one of the most athletic tennis players to play at Texas A&M. Klegou was one of 32 singles players in the country to be selected to the prestigious 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, New York. Earlier in the fall, Klegou advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa and along the way defeated the country’s No. 3-ranked player in Eric Quigley of Kentucky, in straight sets, 7-6 (1), 6-3. Last summer, Klegou was able to play in Davis Cup competition for his father’s home country of Benin.

Last year, Klegou won the clinching points in the 2011 Big 12 Championship match against Oklahoma and repeated with the clinching point against LSU to send Texas A&M to the Round of 16 at Stanford.
