PORT ARTHUR, Texas – Lamar State – Port Arthur freshman Ty Allen scored a game-high 33 points, including 26 in the second half, to lead the Seahawks to a comeback 90-87 victory over the Blinn Buccaneers here Saturday.
Allen made three consecutive 3-pointers on his way to 13 points in a three-minute stretch of the second half, leading the way as Lamar State erased a 14-point second half deficit.
The Buccaneers led 44-35 at halftime and extended that lead to 57-43 with about 15 minutes remaining. But in those final 15 minutes, the Seahawks exploded for 47 points.
“Our defense just broke down at the end,” Blinn (11-11, 3-8) coach Scott Schumacher said. “We let Allen get going.”
Blinn had the ball and trailed by just one point with 26 seconds to go, but the Seahawks forced a turnover and made a pair of free throws to produce the final score. The Bucs set up a fade screen on the game’s final play, but De’Quentin Greer’s 3-point shot glanced off the rim.
Blinn finished the game 11-of-16 from 3-point range, but were done in by 19 turnovers on the night, including 12 in the second half.
In addition to Allen’s 33 points, the Seahawks got 18 from Tre Bennett and 15 from Kieran Woods. Lamar state improved to 13-5 on the season and 6-4 in the Region XIV Conference with the win.
Freshman point guard Donald Moore led the Bucs with 20 points while Greer scored 19 and Darrell Combs added 18. Macari Brooks finished with 15 points.
The Buccaneers host San Jacinto College at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Blinn P.E. Building.
