COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M Soccer junior defender Rachel Lenz was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
It marked the third consecutive week that an Aggie earned one of the league’s three weekly awards. Allie Bailey and Annie Kunz earned SEC Offensive Player of the Week accolades on Sept. 3 and 10, respectively.
Lenz played all 180 minutes as the Aggies recorded a pair of road shutouts to open up SEC play, including silencing Ole Miss, the league’s most prolific offense. The stretch capped off a string of five consecutive shutouts, the first time in school history. It also extended A&M’s string of consecutive scoreless minutes to 516. On Friday night, Lenz scored the game’s lone goal in a 1-0 win at LSU. She also made a key stop late in the first half to keep the Tigers scoreless.
This season, Lenz keys a defense that has yielded just three goals in nine contests. The Aggies’ goals-against average stands at 0.33 on the season, including 0.17 over their current seven-game win streak. Lenz has one goal and one assist on the year.
Lenz was an All-Big 12 First Team selection in both 2010 and 2011. Last week, TopDrawerSoccer.com named the Round Rock, Texas-native to its 11-player National Team of the Week.
The Aggies (8-1-0) attempt to stretch their win streak to eight games on Friday when they host the South Carolina Gamecocks in a 7 p.m. contest at Ellis Field.
