LAWRENCE, Kan. – Texas A&M junior Mary Michael Maggio shot the low round of the day on Sunday to capture the individual title in the 2012 Big 12 Championship at the Lawrence Country Club.
Maggio’s scores improved with each round as the she fired a 77 on the first day, a 73 on the second, and a score of 69 in the final round that gave her a one-stroke advantage over her nearest pursuers. She was one of only two players in the field to break par at the event.
“I’m very proud of Trip and her patience this week,” A&M head coach Trelle McCombs said. “She did a tremendous job of not getting ahead of herself and taking care of the things she could take care of.”
In her first tournament win of the season, Maggio recorded six birdies, including three on Sunday. She is the fourth A&M player to win the Big 12 crown and the first since Ashley Freeman in 2009. Ashley Knoll won the Big 12 title in 2006 and Isabelle Rosberg in 1998.
“It’s a great feeling,” Maggio said. “It’s been a process to get to this point and definitely one that I haven’t taken alone. This is just as much a team effort as an individual one. The conditions were very tough. Overall, I just stayed extremely patient and trusted my game plan which was key.”
