NEW HAVEN, Ct. --- A day after leading Texas A&M to a road upset of top-ranked Alabama, redshirt freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel was named National Offensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Manziel, from Kerrville, Texas, generated 345 total yards to lead the Aggies to a 29-24 win over the Crimson Tide at Bryant-Denny Stadium. It was Texas A&M’s second-ever win over the top-ranked team in the Associated Press Top 25. Manziel completed 24-of-31 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 92 more yards (on 18 carries) on the ground. With the win, Texas A&M improved to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in the SEC West. It is the second time this season Manziel has earned Player of the Week honors (Oct. 14).

With the big game, Manziel became the second freshman in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision history to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 2,000 yards in a single season. The only previous 1,000/2,000 freshman in FBS history was former Missouri QB Brad Smith, who rushed for 1,029 yards and passed for 2,333 yards in 2002.

Manziel has also passed for 2,780 yards and is now just 220 passing yards from becoming the fifth player and first freshman in FBS history to reach 1,000 rushing yards and 3,000 passing yards. The previous four 3,000/1,000 players are Vince Young of Texas (2005), Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan (2007), Colin Kaepernick of Nevada (2010) and Chandler Harnish of Northern Illinois (2011).
