SOUTHHAMPTON, Pa. --- Two of the 2012 season’s breakout stars Johnny Manziel and Damontre Moore of Texas A&M have been added to national award “watch lists” by the Maxwell Football Club.
Manziel, a freshman quarterback from Kerrville, Texas, was added to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, while Moore, a junior defensive end from Rowlett, Texas, was added to the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award. The Maxwell Award is given annually to the nation’s outstanding player, while Bednarik is awarded to the top defender. Manziel, who earned the Aggies’ quarterback job during fall camp, ranks No. 3 nationally in total offense (379.9 yards per game), tied for No. 4 in points responsible for (20.6 points per game) and No. 15 in passing (279.4 yards per game). He is the NCAA’s top freshman in all three categories. With just seven games under his belt, Manziel has already broken the Southeastern Conference record for single game total offense twice. He broke the old SEC record of 540 set originally by Archie Manning of Ole Miss in 1969 and matched by Rohan Davey of LSU in 2001 with 557 total yards against Arkansas. He broke it against two games later with 576 total yards against Louisiana Tech. Moore stands atop the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision statistical rankings with 9.5 quarterback sacks (1.36 per game) and 17 total tackles for loss (2.43 per game). Moore is on pace to match former teammate Von Miller’s 2009 season when he led the nation with 17 sacks. Moore also has a team-high 62 tackles for the season, which ranks No. 52 in the NCAA statistics. He leads all defensive linemen in tackles. Moore has been named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week twice this season, and has received honorable mention National Defensive Lineman of the Week honors from the College Football Performance Awards five times in 2012.
