HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- KBTX Sports has learned former Northwest Missouri State head football coach and current Athletic Director Mel Tjeerdsma is expected to be named as a finalist for the Sam Houston State head football coaching job.
He confirmed to the St. Joseph-News Press Saturday night that he has been contacted by SHSU and will interview Tuesday. Tjeerdsma told the newspaper, "There's no doubt about that. I love this place, and I love what I'm doing. Just an opportunity I can't pass up at least to look at."
Tjeerdsma, 67, retired as a coach in 2010 and took over as the Bearcats Athletic Director in March of 2013.
Tjeerdsma went 183-32 with 12 MIAA titles and 3 NCAA titles at NWMSU.
A complete list of finalists is expected to be released Sunday.
