Morgan Named SEC Player of the Week

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M softball senior Nicole Morgan led the Aggies to their first Southeastern Conference series win last weekend and was named the SEC Player of the Week for her efforts, the conference office announced today.

Morgan (The Woodlands,Texas) was vital at the plate last week for the Aggies, who rallied to a 2-1 series win over 15th-ranked Missouri after struggling against the Tigers on Friday night. After the first weekend of conference play, Morgan ties for first in SEC stats with a 1.143 slugging percentage, six RBI and two home runs. Despite Mizzou pitchers throwing around her, Morgan hammered two three-run home runs to lead the Aggies in both conference wins. The slugger’s three-run shot in the series finale win over Mizzou stunned the Tigers’ ace as it tied the ballgame.

Morgan’s most impressive stats of the week, however, were her .533 on-base percentage and her .900 slugging percentage through four contests that included a midweek game at Texas State. She drew five walks on the week, including an intentional walk against Missouri, patiently waiting on pitches and reaching base by any means possible to help her team.

The senior solidified her position as the top catcher in the league as she led the Aggies to a 3-1 week with a spotless performance behind the plate. The sure-armed senior caught her fourth runner of the season stealing base in the Aggies’ Friday game against the Tigers, and continues to lead the conference with an unheard of seven pickoffs. Of opponents’ runners attempting to steal a base this season, less than two-thirds have been successful against Morgan.

This is Morgan’s first-ever SEC Player of the Week honor, and the first for the Aggies this season.

The team travels to the state of South Carolina this week, playing a single game at College of Charleston Wednesday before facing off with USC in the Aggies’ second SEC series of the season this weekend. To learn more about Texas A&M softball, log on to and follow @Aggie Softball on Twitter.
