Mumford Advances to Class A Division 1 State Championship Game

AUSTIN, Texas -- For the second straight year the Mumford Mustang boys' basketball team (39-0) will play for the Class 1A Division 1 State Championship following a 86-63 win over San Augustine (23-7)Thursday morning at the Erwin Center in Austin.

Mumford jumped out to 47-28 halftime lead and never looked back. LaKendrick Hyson and Aubrie King lead the Mustangs in scoring with 20 points each. Josh Sustaita added 19 including five 3 pointers, while Dion Mack tossed in 14.

Mumford will take on Dallas Triple A (27-5) Saturday morning at 8:30 for the Class A Division 1 State Championship. The Stallions beat El Paso Harmon Science Academy (26-4) in the first Class A Division 1 state semifinal game 90 - 50. Jeremiah Jefferson leading the Stallions with 37 points.

A year ago the Mustangs played for the title against Clarksville, but got beat 65-47. That loss was the only game Mumford lost a year ago and this season they will once again try to complete a perfect season highlighted by the school's first team state championship.

Over the last two seasons the Mustangs are a combined 76 -1.
