Mumford tops district rival Milano; Mustangs headed back to state

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas -- The Mumford Mustangs (38-0) have repeated as Class 1A Region 4 Division 1 Champions following a 51-38 win over the Milano Eagles (26-8).

Aubrey King scored 11 of his game high 17 points in the 3rd quarter as Mumford was able to protect its 7 point halftime lead and take a 37-30 advantage to the 4th quarter.

In the final stanza Mumford was able to outscore the Eagles 14-8 and claim their second straight regional championship.

LaKendrick Hyson scored 12 points, while Dion Mack added 11. Josh Sustaita had 7 points and Seth Smitherman 4 to round out the Mustangs scoring.

Milano was able to shrink Mumford's lead to five a couple of times in the 4th quarter, but could never get any closer. The Eagles were once again balanced in the scorebook with Toby Sanders leading the way with 11. Dominique Messer and David Jentsch each had 10, and Jordan Millar added 7.

Mumford will find out Sunday who they will face in the 1A Division 1 Semifinals on Thursday.

Tip off for the unbeaten Mustangs from the Erwin Center will be at either 8:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. Thursday.
