COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The No. 12 Texas A&M men’s tennis team is set to open the spring season Sunday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center with dual matches against Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas-Pan American. The Aggie’s spring opener is set for noon against the Ragin’ Cajuns followed by a meeting with the Broncs at 4:00 p.m.
“We are excited about the season starting and getting to see what level the guys are playing at right now,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “It is going to be nice to evaluate the team in a match situation and get some live court time this weekend. We need this double header to begin sorting the lineup and learn what we need to keep working on in practice.”
The Aggies return six members from last season’s 19-13 squad that advanced to the NCAA Round of 16. Headlining the group of returners are junior Jeremy Efferding and sophomore Harrison Adams, ranked No. 13 and No. 19 respectively. Also returning is junior Shane Vinsant that led the team in 2013 with a 20-8 dual record, entering the spring ranked No. 38.
The Cajuns return its entire lineup from a squad that posted a 15-12 record and reached the semifinals of the Sun Belt tournament one season ago. The Aggies are 3-0 all-time against Louisiana-Lafayette, winning 5-2 in 2012, Coach Denton’s 100th victory at Texas A&M.
UTPA returns five players from last season’s 8-17 team, but are aided by the addition of two newcomers this spring and are looking to make a splash in their first season of Western Athletic Conference action. Texas A&M is 14-2 all-time against UTPA with their last meeting a 6-1 victory in College Station in 2011.
