AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 4 seed Texas A&M Equestrian team dropped a 15-5 decision to No. 3 seed Georgia on Saturday in the consolation round of the inaugural Southeastern Conference Equestrian Championship.
“I thought our riders executed our game plan well today,” Head Coach Tana McKay said. “I was really happy with the improvements we made from yesterday. This has been a tough year for our squad, but our riders have shown a lot of heart.”
Senior Carey Nowacek was named to the first-ever SEC Equestrian Championship Team for horsemanship after a big weekend in the arena. The San Antonio, Texas, native earned a 13.5-point victory that gave the Aggies a 3-2 horsemanship win against No. 1 seed Auburn in the semifinals.
A&M earned two Most Outstanding Player (MOP) honors against UGA today as sophomores Haley Buchmiller (flat) and Laura Sumrall (reining) dominated their rides. Buchmiller rode to a 14-point victory and Sumrall defeated her opponent by six points. Both riders were 2-for-2 on the weekend.
Senior Kelsi Shevlin also earned a point for equitation on the flat, and freshman Hannah Jechow joined Sumrall in the win column for reining. Sophomore Molli Jacobs earned the lone horsemanship victory against UGA. Georgia took a 5-0 sweep of equitation over fences, but three of the Aggies’ five losses were by just one point.
The Aggies will learn their postseason fate in the next two weeks when seedings are finalized for the National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) Championships, set for April 17-20 in Waco. A&M will look to defend its western and overall titles from last season. To learn more about Texas A&M equestrian, log on to and follow @AggieEquestrian on Twitter.
