Nowitzki think Mavs can do something with Plan B

DALLAS (AP) - Dirk Nowitzki thinks Plan B worked out fine for the Dallas Mavericks.

The 7-foot German said during the offseason that Dallas had to have a backup plan if Dwight Howard chose another home in free agency.

When the former Orlando and Los Angeles Lakers center picked Houston, the Mavericks committed to guards Monta Ellis and Jose Calderon with their first long-term deals since Nowitzki re-signed before the franchise's first title season in 2010-11.

Nowitzki says it will take time with nine new players but "hopefully we can make it all work and mesh."

The Mavericks missed the playoffs last season for the first time since Nowitzki's second year in the league in 2000. They have revamped their roster three straight offseasons.
