HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Oral Roberts defeated Sam Houston 25-16 26-24 25-19 in a Southland Conference volleyball match Thursday at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Deveney Wells-Gibson of SHSU and Sara Pope of ORU each led their teams with 13 kills.
The loss dropped Sam Houston to 11-2 in Southland Conference action and ended a five-match Bearkat winning streak. The Kats stand 14-8 for the year. Oral Roberts now is 10-3 in league action and 18-5 for the year.
Oral Roberts took control at 8-8 in the first set, going on a 7-1 run on Jessica Pancratz’s serve. The Bearkats never could come closer than two points.
Sam Houston bounced back to take a 19-14 lead in the second set. ORU again went on a roll, closing out the set by winning 12 of the next 17 points.
The third set was tied eight times with three lead changes but the Eagles took advantage of 12 Sam Houston errors in the frame to close out the match.
Shelby Genung and Carling Urben each totaled five kills for SHSU. Tayler Gray assisted on 29 of SHSU’s 32 kills. Breanna Homer led the team with 15 digs.
Sam Houston takes on first place Central Arkansas Saturday at 2 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum.
