HOUSTON, Texas -- Albert Miner finished tied for fifth as the Sam Houston State men’s golf team were runners-up at the Rice Intercollegiate held at Westwood Golf Club. The Bearkats went low Tuesday after sitting fourth after the first two rounds Monday.
Winer (72-74-70-216) went into the final round five shots off the lead and finished in the same spot after firing two under Tuesday. The fifth place finish is the best for Miner this season outside of the Kats home event, the Harold Funston Intercollegiate.
Zach Cabra (72-75-71-218) had a solid tournament as well, finishing tied for eighth after sitting 15th going into the day.
Freshman Klein Klotz rallied from a first round 77 to finish tied for 13th. Klotz fired a 71 in the second round and a 72 in the final round after he was in 45th place to start play Tuesday.
Logan Boatner (75-76-73-224) was tied for 22nd and Andrew Johnson (80-80-76-236) was tied for 72nd.
The Bearkats nearly caught the defending tournament champs Texas-San Antonio and finished just three strokes behind the Roadrunners.
Cincinnati was third, Old Dominion was fourth and the host Rice Owls were fifth.
Sam Houston will return to the course March 3-4 at the Louisiana Tech Argent Financial Invitational.
