Kentucky’s Kyle Wiltjer, a 6-foot-10, 239-pound sophomore forward from Portland, Ore., was named SEC Player of the Week after scoring 19 points and recording six rebounds, three blocks and two assists in a72-69 victory over Maryland. Wiltjer led the Wildcats with 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting including a 4-for-6 clip from 3-point range. The four 3-pointers ranks as a career high in addition to a career-high three swats. His 19 points are the most since scoring 24 against Loyola on Dec. 22, 2011. He scored 11 first half points to reach double-figures for just the sixth time in his career. He also sunk two free throws in a clutch situation (final three minutes in a six-point game).
South Carolina’s Michael Carrera, a 6-foot-5, 212-pound freshman forward from Anzoátegui, Venezuela, was named SEC Freshman of the Week after scoring 17 points and gathering 15 rebounds in a win over Milwaukee.The high-energy forward shot 50 percent for the game, and hit a perfect 5-of-5 attempts from the free throw line. Carrera had a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds at halftime, and quickly claimed the double-double in the second half. He was instrumental in the overtime period as well, hitting two free throws early in the five-minute session to give the Gamecocks the lead for good. The win marked the first for Frank Martin as head coach of the Gamecocks.
