After a two-week road trip, both the Sam Houston men’s and women’s basketball teams return to Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum this week for four big Southland Conference games.
A special highlight for Thursday night’s doubleheader will be the a special recognition ceremony for the 2012 Sam Houston State football team that brought home its second consecutive Southland Conference championship trophy and rolled through the NCAA playoffs to reach the Division I title game again.
The football team has earned the No. 2 ranking in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision each of the past two years, a feat unprecedented in Southland Conference history.
The recognition ceremony will take place at halftime of Thursday’s 7:45 p.m. men’s game.
With the 2013 Southland Conference race at its mid-point all four games this week are crucial to the Bearkats.
The Sam Houston women’s basketball team stands in first place with an 8-1 league record and a two-game lead over its nearest competition.
When the Bearkat women take on McNeese State at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, they will be looking for revenge as the Cowgirls are the only team to pin a loss on Sam Houston in Southland play.
Sam Houston is led by three senior players – forwards Britni Martin and Sequeena Thomas and guard Chanice Smith – who all have scored 1,000 or more points during their Bearkat careers.
The Sam Houston men got back in the Southland playoff picture with a victory at A&M-Corpus Christi last Saturday. The Bearkats stand 5-4 in league action and are 12-9 for the year.
Thursday is “Whataburger” Night at Johnson Coliseum with a special halftime promotion and Whataburger coupons handed out to winners at both games.
Both games Thursday – the women at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:45 p.m. – will be televised regionally on the Southland Conference Television Network and on ESPN3.
Saturday is “Domino’s Pizza” day at Bearkat basketball.
Sam Houston plays host to Lamar with the women tipping off at 1:30 p.m. and the men at 3:45 p.m.
Sam Houston students are admitted to Bearkat home games on presentation of the BearkatOne cards.
