A special recognition ceremony for the 2012 Bearkat Southland Conference champion and No. 2 nationally-ranked football team will take place at halftime of the 7:45 p.m. men's basketball game Thursday night at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Sam Houston is hosting McNeese State in a women's and men's Southland basketball doubleheader. The women tip at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:45 p.m. Both tilts will be telecast by ESPN3. With the 2013 Southland Conference race at its mid-point all four games this week are crucial to the Bearkats. The Sam Houston women's basketball team stands in first place with an 8-1 league record and a two-game lead over its nearest competition.
When the Bearkat women take on McNeese State, they will be looking for revenge as the Cowgirls are the only team to pin a loss on Sam Houston in Southland play. Sam Houston is led by three senior players - forwards Britni Martin and Sequeena Thomas and guard Chanice Smith - who all have scored 1,000 or more points during their Bearkat careers. Sam Houston State senior forward Sequeena Thomas is one of the nation's most prolific rebounders, ranking third in the country with 12.8 rebounds per game.
She ranks behind only Robert Morris' Artemis Spanou (14.7) and High Point's Cheyenne Parker (12.9). Thomas is also tied for ninth in the nation with 14 double-doubles on the season. Western Kentucky's Chastity Gooch leads all players with 18.
The Sam Houston men got back in the Southland playoff picture with a victory at A&M-Corpus Christi last Saturday. The Bearkats stand 5-4 in league action and are 12-9 for the year. With roster containing only one senior and five players who brought NCAA Division I experience into the 2012-13 season, Sam Houston State puts a squad one the floor with one thought in mind - playing tough, hard-nosed defense. Sam Houston is 12-0 in games it which the Bearkats have limited opponents to 63 points or less. The Bearkats are 0-9 in contests in which its foes scored more than 63 points.
The Bearkats rank second behind league-leading Stephen F. Austin in Southland Conference scoring defense (61.2 points per game), field goal defense (.406) and three-point defense (.297). In Sam Houston's 12 victories, the Bearkats have held opponents to 52.8 points per game and .360 field goal shooting. In the team's nine losses, opponents have scored 72.4 points per game and hit .469 from the floor.
The football team has earned the No. 2 ranking in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision each of the past two years, a feat unprecedented in Southland Conference history.
Thursday is "Whataburger" Night at Johnson Coliseum with a special halftime promotion and Whataburger coupons handed out to winners at both games. The big winner of the halftime contest will be Whataburgers for a year.
Sam Houston students are admitted to Bearkat home games on presentation of the BearkatOne cards.
