Nacogdoches – Outfielders Tori Benavidez and Cecilia Castillo each totaled two hits and three RBIs to power Sam Houston to an 8-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin and a Southland Conference weekend softball series win over the Lumberjacks Saturday.
The Bearkats, who split a doubleheader with SFA Saturday, upped their record to 20-18 for the season and 6-6 in Southland action.
Benavidez started things for Sam Houston with a three-run homer in the top of the second inning. Castillo produced a two-run double in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth. Tiffany Castillo also had an RBI single in the fourth.
Haley Baros (6-7) was the winning pitcher for the Bearkats, giving up only three hits in seven innings and striking out four Lumberjacks.
Next action for the Bearkats will be a three-game home series with Houston Baptist. On Saturday April 6, the HBU and Sam Houston meet in a 1 p.m. doubleheader. The series will end with a 1 p.m. single game Sunday April 7.
