Winners of seven of their last 10 games, the Sam Houston softball team plays a former Southland Conference foe Wednesday as the Kats play host to Texas-San Antonio in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the Softball Complex.
The Bearkats stand 8-10 overall for the year after dropping two of three in their first Southland Conference weekend series of 2014 against preseason favorite McNeese Saturday and Sunday.
UTSA comes into Wednesday’s action with an 11-12 overall record. That includes losses to programs such as Baylor, Mississippi State and Oklahoma State.
Against the Southland, the Roadrunners stand 4-0 this year. UTSA swept a three-game series with Lamar to open the season and also defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Sam Houston features a line-up that relies on power at the plate. The Bearkats have scored 93 runs in 18 games thus far and are hitting .301 as a team.
Shortstop Tayler Gray (.410), third baseman Tori Koerselman (.389) and outfielder Cecilia Castillo (.340) all sport weighty batting averages. The Kats have combined for 21 doubles, three triples and 21 home runs this season.
Haley Baros (3-5, 3.76 ERA), Shelby Lancaster (2-3, 4.83 ERA) and Tayler Atkinson (1-1, 4.50 ERA) have seen the most action in the circle for the SHSU women.
UTSA owns a .219 team batting average. The Roadrunners top two hitters are catcher Megan Low (.323) and second baseman Courtney Buchman (.250). The team’s top two pitchers, Nicole Merrill and Kacy Freeze, each have struck out 55 batters.
The doubleheader Wednesday marks the first pair of games in a week-long spring break schedule that sees the Bearkats heading to San Marcos to face Texas State Thursday and play a weekend league series at Southeastern Louisiana Saturday and Sunday.
