Following an impressive performance against the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville Friday, the Sam Houston men’s basketball team plays its first home game of the 2012-13 season Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
The Bearkats will host the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. The game will be broadcast live on KSAM 101.FM in the Huntsville area and on the web.
Hardin-Simmons' has been picked to finish second in the American Southwest Conference West Division. The Cowboys return four players from their 21-7 squad from 2011-12.
Sam Houston State threw a scare into the Arkansas Razorbacks, falling by only five points 73-68 Friday night in both team's season opener.
Darius Gatson led Sam Houston with 20 points, hitting four of six three-point attempts. James Thomas added 14 points and Demarcus Gatlin scored 10.
“We’re definitely not a finished product, but I was very pleased with the effort,” SHSU head coach Jason Hooten said. "With a lineup that includes seven young guys who were playing their first NCAA Division I game against a team like Arkansas that presses for 40 minutes and an atmosphere like this one in Fayetteville, I was really happy with the way these guys refused to fold under pressure."
The Bearkats kept the contest close throughout the second period. Gatson cut the lead to four 42-38 with 16:19 to play and a three-pointer by Marquel McKinney brought SHSU within three 46-43 at the 13:18 mark. Jeremy McKay's trey with 51 seconds to play made it a four-point game, but the Hogs held on for the victory.
The Hardin-Simmons game is the first of five contest for the Bearkats in the next two weeks.
Thursday Sam Houston begins action in the Progressive Legends Classic, traveling to Bloomington to take on No. 1 ranked Indiana in the first round.
