SHSU Baseball Hosts Islanders Friday-Sunday

With four weeks left in the 2012 Southland Conference regular season, the Sam Houston State baseball team seeks to consolidate its lead in the league race with an important three-game series with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The Bearkats and the Islanders begin the weekend set Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium. The pair will play at 4 p.m. Saturday with the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.

Winners in 18 of their last 20 games, Sam Houston stands 29-11 for the year. The Bearkats are ranked in all four major NCAA Division I polls with a high ranking of No. 22.

Sam Houston owns a four-game lead over second place teams UT-Arlington and Southeastern Louisiana. The Bearkats stand 17-4 in league action while UTA and Southeastern are 13-8. SHSU must play both contenders during the final three weeks of the season as the Bearkats travel to Arlington next weekend and host the Lions in two weeks.

Winners of four Southland Conference post-season tournaments (in 1996, 2007, 2008 and 2009), Sam Houston State has not won a Southland regular season title since 1989.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi brings a 16-24 season mark and 9-12 Southland record into the weekend.

The three games with the Islanders are part of a five-game home stand that will conclude Tuesday night when Sam Houston play host to the nationally ranked Texas Aggies at 6:30 p.m.
