Looking to bounce back after losses in two of their last three games, the Sam Houston women's basketball team plays host to the UTSA Roadrunners Saturday at 2 p.m.
Sam Houston State holds a narrow half-game lead over the Roadrunners in the Southland Conference West Division. The Bearkats are 9-8 for the year and stand first in the West with a 4-2 league mark. UTSA is 7-11 for the season and 3-2 in the Southland.
Saturday's contest is a rematch of the 2012 league opener for both teams. Sam Houston won 63-50 over UTSA on Jan. 7, the Bearkats' first victory at the Convocation Center in San Antonio since 2000.
Britni Martin led SHSU in that game with 19 points. Jasmine Johnson added 10 points.
UTSA leads the all-time series between the two teams. The Roadrunners have won 33 games while Sam Houston holds 14 victories in the series.
Britni Martin, a 6-0 forward from Conroe leads the averaging 16.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists. The junior has posted 13 double-figure scoring performances including a season best of 30 points in Wednesday's loss to SFA.
Martin ranks No. 1 in the Southland in free throw percentage (.821). She stands No. 4 in the league in three point field goals made (37) and No. 5 in both scoring and assists.
Sequeena Thomas, a 6-0 junior forward from Allentown, Penn., is Sam Houston's other offensive weapon. Thomas is averaging 13.9 points and 10.7 rebounds per game this season.
Thomas leads the Southland Conference in rebounding, ranks No. 9 in scoring and stands No. 4 in blocks.
Kamra King, a 5-6 guard from Norman, Oklahoma, leads the Roadrunners with 8.9 points per game.
Cori Cooper, a 6-1 forward from Copperas Cove, is averaging 7.3 points per game and posted a season high of 18 points in her last outing.
The Roadrunners have won three of their last four games, defeating Texas State 67-53 in San Antonio last Wednesday.
