Arlington – The Sam Houston baseball team suffered its first Southland Conference series loss of the season Sunday as UT-Arlington rallied for a 6-3 victory.
After the Bearkats won the series opened 2-0 in a game that was stopped Friday night due to lightning and finished Saturday afternoon, the Mavericks took the second game 7-4.
Sam Houston remains in first place in the Southland Conference race with a 20-7 league mark and drops to 32-15 for the series. UT-Arlington stays in the hunt for the league crowd with a 16-11 Southland record and a 29-20 overall slate.
Sunday’s game was marred by three Bearkat errors and two miscues by the Mavericks. Both teams gave up three unearned runs.
Sam Houston took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Kevin Miller walked and later scored on a UTA error.
The Mavericks tied the game with a run in the fourth inning and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth.
Sam Houston jumped back in front 3-2 in the seventh as Ryan Farney brought in a run with a ground out and Colt Atwood posted an RBI single.
The lead was short-lived as UTA posted two runs in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings.
Michael Burchett (2-2) was the losing pitcher in relief for Sam Houston. Both teams used five pitchers Sunday with reliever John Beck (2-1) taking the win for UTA.
Sam Houston State places host to second place Southeastern Louisiana in the last regular season home Southland Conference weekend series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
