HUNSVILLE, Texas -- Kaheem Ransom of Sam Houston State has been named the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Ransom led the Bearkats to a pair of road victories this week, averaging 21.5 points in wins over Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans.
The junior from Wichita, Kan. (Southeast H.S.) scored 22 points and added three rebounds and four assists in an 85-78 win last Thursday against the Lions and went for 21 points, four rebounds and two steals in a 77-70 victory on Saturday at New Orleans.
Ransom connected on 12 of 21 shots from the floor, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range. He was perfect on all 14 free throw tries in the two games.
The Bearkats, winners of their last four games, are tied for second in the Southland standings, one game out of first place with a 5-1 league record. Sam Houston is 13-5 overall.
Ransom is the second-leading scorer for the SHSU men this season, averaging 12.3 points per game. He ranks eighth in the Southland in assists (3.6 per contest).
The junior guard has been the leading scorer for Sam Houston in six games this year including three of SHSU’s last four contest. The Bearkats are 9-1 when Ransom scores in double figures.
The SHSU men head to Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian for Southland road contests Thursday and Saturday. The next home game for Sam Houston is Thursday, Jan. 30, when the Kats play host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
