SHSU tops Southeastern Louisiana

Huntsville – Britni Martin scored 16 points to lead Sam Houston to a 93-75 Southland Conference women’s basketball victory over Southeastern Louisiana Saturday afternoon.
The Sam Houston women (16-12, Southland 12-4) now are only two games away from securing no worse than a tie for the program’s first conference championship in the university’s 26 years in the Southland.
Four other Bearkat women scored in double figures as Sally Clavelle posted 13 points, Jasmine Johnson 121, Sequeena Thomas 11 and Chanice Smith 10.
Thomas led the Bearkats with 11 boards. She now has posted a school record of 50 games with both double figure points and rebounds in her career including 18 double-doubles this season.
For Martin, Sam Houston’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,750 points, the afternoon’s performance was her 95th career double figure game.
Sam Houston never trailed, jumping out to an 11-0 lead in the first five minutes and leading at intermission 43-28. The Kats’ largest lead in the first period was by 17 points, 37-20, after a three-point basketball by Chanice Smith 2:23 before halftime.
The Kats’ largest margin was a 31-point lead with 2:50 to play.
The Bearkat women close the season with road games at Stephen F. Austin on Thursday night and Northwestern State Saturday afternoon.
Victories in those games not only with clinch a tie for the Southland title but will give the Bearkats a bye into the semifinals of the Southland Conference post-season tournament which begins Wednesday March 13 at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy.
