For the first time in 19 days both the Sam Houston men and women return to Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum for a Southland Conference basketball doubleheader Thursday night.
The Bearkats play host to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with the women tipping off at 5:30 p.m. and the men following at 7:45.
Both teams went 3-1 on their four-game, two-week road swings through Southern Louisiana and West Texas.
Sam Houston defeated Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans in the Pelican State and split with Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian last weekend.
Thursday’s contest is a big one for the men as the Kats and the Islanders are tied for second place in the Southland race with identical 6-2 league marks. Stephen F. Austin, unbeaten in seven conference contests, stands in first place.
Sam Houston’s backcourt trio of Jabari Peters, Kaheem Ransom and Paul Baxter lead the Bearkats in scoring with averages of 13.6, 11.8 and 10.0, respectively. Center Michael Holyfield is the Kats’ top rebounder with 5.7 boards per game.
The Bearkat women rallied for an 86-85 overtime win at Southeastern Louisiana then rolled past New Orleans 78-47 and Incarnate Word 60-51. Abilene Christian ended the women’s four-game winning streak with a 73-67 defeat Saturday.
Sam Houston stands in eighth place in the Southland women’s race with a 4-4 league mark. But, with five teams tied for third with 4-3 records, the Kats could climb back into contention quickly with a pair of home wins this week.
Angela Beadle leads the SHSU women with 15.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. Jasmine Johnson also scores in double figures with 12.8 points per game.
John Jordan leads the Islander men with 15.7 points per game. A&M-Corpus Christi saw its three-game winning streak ended by New Orleans last weekend.
The Islander women feature two players scoring in double figures with Jasmine Shaw averaging 15.6 points per game and Brittany Mbamalu 10.3.
One Sam Houston student will have the opportunity to hit a half-court shot to win a Ford Fiesta Thursday as Bill Fick Ford presents the “Fling for a Fiesta” contest.
Other prizes in the event include an Ipod and gift certificates furnished by Brook Place Apartments.
Students can register Thursday at the LSC Mall area from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or at Johnson Coliseum starting at 5:00 p.m. prior to the women’s game.
The women’s game Thursday will be broadcast live on KHVL 104.7 The Hits while the men’s contest will air on KSAM 101.7 FM.
