HUNTSVILLE, WALKER COUNTY Back on the winning track after a buzzer-beater 51-50 victory over Nicholls Saturday, the SHSU women’s basketball team begins a two-week, four-game road swing Thursday night against Southeastern Louisiana in Hammond.
Each game on the road trip is crucial for the Bearkats who look to fight their way back into the Southland Conference race after opening league play with three losses.
Only two teams, Stephen F. Austin (4-0) and Abilene Christian (2-0), still have unblemished records.
Sam Houston stands 6-9 for the season while Southeastern Louisiana is 3-13. The Lions own a 2-2 league mark.
Thursday’s game will start at 4:30 p.m. in Hammond, La. The Bearkat men’s game with the Lions will follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. Both games can be heard in the Huntsville area with the women’s broadcast found on KHVL 104.9 The Hits FM and streamed on www.gobearkats.com.
Senior guard Jasmine Johnson hit the game-winning trey Saturday in the victory over the Colonels. With just a half second left on the clock, Johnson took the inbounds pass from Amanda Barnes and it nothing but net.
Johnson is Sam Houston’s second-leading scorer this year with 12.0 points per game. Also scoring in double figures is junior post player Angela Beadle (14.1 points).
The Bearkat women have been getting solid performances from Barnes (4.9 points) and freshmen backcourt players Kristina Smith (5.2 points) and Taylor Dorsey (7.1 points) as well as forwards junior Jazmin Wiley (6.9 points) and senior Nyha Carter (6.7 points).
Following the game at Hammond, Sam Houston will travel to New Orleans Saturday, Incarnate Word Thursday, Jan. 23, and Abilene Christian Saturday, Jan. 25.
Sam Houston’s next home game is Thursday, Jan. 30, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
