Sam Houston Volleyball Beats McNeese State In Three

Led by Deveney Wells-Gibson and Kendall Cleveland, Sam Houston State got one step closer to a Southland Conference volleyball championship with a three-set victory over McNeese State Thursday night.

Sam Houston (19-10, SLC 14-3) defeated McNeese State (7-24, SLC 1-16) 25-15 25-11 25-19. A victory Saturday afternoon against Lamar will clinch the Bearkats their first Southland volleyball title since 1994.

Wells-Gibson totaled 16 kills in 27 attempts while Cleveland added 10 kills in 19 attempts.

Kaylee Hawkins and Kim Black added nine and eight kills, respectively.

McNeese never led in the first set, had one early lead in the second and tied the score five times in the third as Sam Houston was in charge from beginning to end. The Bearkats out-pointed the Cowgirls 60 to 24.

Tayler Gray assisted on 40 of Sam Houston’s 45 kills and totaled six digs. Hawkins led the defense with 12 digs. Black had a hand in five of the Bearkats’ nine blocks.
