Sam Houston hosts NW St in basketball double header Monday

Both the Sam Houston men and women’s basketball teams are on a roll as they come into Monday night’s Southland Conference doubleheader against Northwestern State.
Led by two senior forwards who are putting up serious numbers this season, the Sam Houston women’s basketball team will play host to Northwestern State in the second Southland Conference contest for the Bearkats of the 2013 league race Monday night.
Britni Martin and Sequeena Thomas are ripping through the Bearkat women’s record book. Sam Houston and the Demons face off Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
Last week, Martin extended her streak of double figure scoring games to 29 (13 this year and the final 16 games of the 2011-12 season) in back-to-back victories over HBU and A&M-Corpus Christi. During the two games, the senior from Conroe perfect on the line with 14 of 14 free throws. Martin has made 29 of her last 31 free throw attempts
With 26 points in a victory over A&M-Corpus Christi Friday, Martin upped her career scoring total to 1,536. Martin ranks No. 2 in all-time SHSU women’s scoring (Sherry Pfister is SHSU’s all-time leader with 1,975 points in 1980-83). She also stands as SHSU’s all-time leader in treys with 270 in her career.
Thomas continues to climb closer to the SHSU all-time leading rebounding record. With 914 career boards, she trails all-time leader Altanette Denley (962 in 1980-83) by 48 rebounds.
Thomas stands 10th in SHSU career scoring (1,129 points) and ranks as Sam Houston’s all-time leader in blocks (156).
Both Martin and Thomas rank among the best in the Southland Conference this year.
Martin ranks fourth in the league in scoring (17.4 points), seventh in free throw percentage (.800) and leads the Southland in total three point baskets (38).
Thomas is the Southland’s top rebounder (12.0) and leads the league in blocks (18). She stands eighth in scoring with 13.3 points per contest.
Sam Houston is 5-8 for the year and 1-0 in the Southland action. Northwestern State is 1-1 in league play and stands 5-7 for the year.
At 7:45 p.m., after the women complete action, Sam Houston State’s men play host to the Demons.
After a 1-3 start, the Bearkats have won seven of their last nine games including their last five in a row.
No player on the SHSU roster is averaging in double figures but the Kats’ attack certainly is balance with six players averaging between 6.5 and 8.7 points per game. In SHSU’s 13 games, the Bearkats have been led in scoring by eight different players. Nine players have scored in double figures at least once .
Senior guard Darius Gatson was the leading scorer for Sam Houston as Bearkats picked up their fifth victory in a row Friday over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Gatson hit a three-pointer to tie game 49-49 with 3:44 to play as Kats outscored Islanders 8-4 in the final minutes.
