Shelbi Tucker, Sam Houston State third baseman, has been voted as the Southland Conference softball "Hitter of the Week" after leading the Bearkats to four league victories.
Tucker helped Sam Houston State extend its winning streak to eight games with two conference sweeps of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UT Arlington.
A native of Montgomery, Texas (Montgomery H.S.), Tucker provided the winning runs in two of the Bearkats' wins on the week while hitting .462 (6-for-13).
Against the Islanders, Tucker knocked in the winning runs with a three-run homerun, her conference-leading 10th of the season. In the series finale against the Mavericks, Tucker went 5-for-5, including a three-run triple in the eighth inning to give the Bearkats the 10-7 win.
In four games, Tucker tallied six hits, including two doubles, a triple and a homerun, scored four runs and knocked in eight RBI.
Tucker and team mate Kim Damian lead the Southland Conference in home runs this season, both with 10 each. Sam Houston leads the Southland with a school record 46 home runs in 2012.
Tucker sports a .304 batting average, third best on the team, and leads the Kats with 36 RBIs.
Sam Houston State (26-17) has won 25 of its last 29 games and stands second in the Southland standings with a 14-4 league mark.
The Bearkats play host to league leader Texas State Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bobcats have clinched a tie for the Southland regular season championship. But Sam Houston victories in both games would earn the Kats a co-championship with the visitors from San Marcos.
