Snook girls looking for more in second straight trip to state tournament

SNOOK, Texas -- The Snook Lady Jays are headed to the 1A state basketball tournament for the second straight season, and this time they hope to get past the semifinal round.

A year ago eventual state champ Sudan eliminated Snook 64-42, and it's been the Lady Jays goal to get back to Austin ever since.

At 24-11 Snook has the worst record of any 1A Division one state qualifier, but they picked up many of those losses playing a tough pre-district schedule, including a 60-37 loss to their opponent Thursday Martin's Mill.

Martin's Mill is at the state tourney for the 8th year in a row and no doubt will be a challenge, but the Lady Jays are riding a 15 game winning streak and are happy to have another shot at a state title.

Head coach Micah Milliorn said, "We're very excited. We went last year and it was a great experience for us and the kids got a taste of what it's like and from the beginning of the year that was our goal to get back there. We want to get there and hopefully get past the semifinal game. I know the kids really want to get to that final game and try to win that championship."

Senior Shakera Barnes added, "We're very excited, but this year we're looking forward to going further than we did last year but we know it's going to be a hard competition."

Snook and Martin's Mill meet Thursday at 10 a.m. in one state semifinal. Dallas Triple A Academy and Smyer are the first semi at 8:30 a.m.

Martin's Mill is making their eighth straight trip to state and ninth overall. Snook is state bound for the fifth time in program history.
