The Sam Houston State men's golf team will wrap up their 2012-13 schedule at the 50th annual Southland Conference Championship Monday through Wednesday at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas.
The Bearkats have won two regular season intercollegiate tournaments this year. The Bearkats took the Harold Funston Invitational at Raven Nest in Huntsville in October and won the ULM Wallace Jones Invitational, April 8-9.
The tournament will be played on the par-72, 7,346-yard Pete Dye Signature Course, where it was last year.
Sam Houston is led by junior Albert Miner, who claimed medalist honors at the Wallace Jones Invitational, and has placed in the top 15 in eight of 11 tournaments this year. Miner, who averages 73.09 strokes per round, has five top-five finishes this season.
Lamar will be trying to defend last year’s title, which was its 24th overall Southland championship and first since the 2009 season.
Central Arkansas, which is still looking for its first Southland championship, is the top-rated Southland team according to the Golfstat rankings, which is used to seed the teams in the opening round. In last year’s championship, the Bears fell to Lamar in a one-hole playoff after finishing the first 54 holes tied for the lead.
Southeastern Louisiana, which won its third Southland championship in 2010, is the second-ranked team and is led by freshman Eamon Bradley and senior Rhys West, who rank third and fifth, respectively, in the conference in stroke average.
Southland golfers have accounted for seven medalist honors while the schools have collected seven team titles this year.
The conference tournament is slated to tee off Monday at 8 a.m. Pairings are based on team seeding, which is calculated using the Golfstat rankings. Players will play 18 holes of golf Monday and Tuesday before playing the final round of 18 holes Wednesday.
Eight Southland universities field a men's golf team: Central Arkansas, Lamar, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin.
