COLLEGE STATION – The Texas A&M men’s golf team will tee off its 2012-13 campaign this weekend with a trip to the west coast to compete in the Carmel Cup at Pebble Beach, Calif.

“We’re playing Pebble Beach and the Bayonet Course,” Texas A&M head coach J.T. Higgins said. “Bayonet is a course that a lot of people haven’t heard of, but it’s one of my favorites that I’ve ever been to. It’s a very difficult, challenging course but right on the ocean.”

TCU, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt join the Aggies at the event which features an SEC/Big 12 Par 3 competition, team-vs-team medal match play and an overall individual champion.

“All of the coaches know that we’re throwing ourselves in really quick,” Higgins said of event format. “We didn’t want to do something where we could have a terrible week and it hurt you for the rest of the week, so it’s just four teams and we were fortunate enough to get invited. It’s going to be a really cool trip; we’re looking forward to it.”

Competing for Texas A&M this weekend will be Cameron Peck, Johannes Veerman, Greg Yates, Ben Crancer, Jade Scott and Case Cochran.

Carmel Cup Schedule/Format
The weekend will begin on Friday with a late-morning practice round on Bayonet Golf Course before the venue shifts to the Pebble Beach Par 3 Course for Friday afternoon’s Par 3 competition.

On Saturday, the Aggies will begin match play with a morning round on the Bayonet Course against TCU before returning to action during the afternoon with a round against Texas Tech at Pebble Beach.

The event will conclude on Sunday as Texas A&M faces its first SEC opponent as a member of the league when it duals Vanderbilt on Pebble Beach.

Medal match play will feature each school’s six-member team facing off against the opposing school’s players on an individual basis with a single point on the line. The total number of individual matches won and halved will carry over for each team during the entire event and the team with the most overall points will win the Carmel Cup.

An individual champion will also be named after completion of the 54-hole event.
