GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Texas A&M women’s golf team finished in a tie for fourth in the loaded field at the SunTrust Gator invitational Sunday afternoon, hosted by the University of Florida. Freshman Marijosse Navarro tied for second place individually at five-over par on the par-70 6,002 yard Mark Bostick Golf Course.
After starting the day in a tie for third the Aggies (301-280-303) slid one spot on the leaderboard into a tie for fourth with Miami (295-296-293). Arizona (294-287-285) claimed the team title with Kent State, Ohio State, Miami, Texas A&M, Virginia, Florida State, Florida, Oklahoma and Penn State rounding out the top-10. UTSA, Old Dominion, Furman and South Florida completed the field.
“We lost our composure when we made some mistakes,” head coach Trelle McCombs said. “We just never really got anything going. This team is still so young and we are going to have to put ourselves in this position more and more to really get comfortable. I'm very optimistic about our future.”
Freshman Marijosse Navarro (71-69-75) continues to impress since joining the Aggies in January. The Mexico City native earned runner-up honors in a field that included 14 top-100 players. Navarro claimed the individual title at last Sunday’s Battle at the Valley and finished 11th at the UC Irvine Invitational in her maroon and white debut.
“MJ was a bit nervous today leading her to hit some uncharacteristic shots,” McCombs said. “She's young and will handle this situation a little better next time. Finishing tied for second in this great field is a huge accomplishment. She's well on her way to setting records if she keeps going this direction.”
Joining Navarro near the top of the leaderboard was senior Katerina Ruzickova in a tie for 15th. Ruzickova has finished in the top-20 of all eight events Texas A&M has participated in this season. Freshman Andrea Jonama and Bianca Fabrizio tied for 43rd, senior Chelsea Mocio completed the A&M contingent in a tie for 68th.
