COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Three Texas A&M volleyball players have been named to the UTSA Classic all-tournament team, announced today.
Senior setter Allie Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba, Canada) and sophomore outside hitters Angela Lowak (New Braunfels, Texas) and Sierra Patrick (Austin, Texas) garnered all-tournament honors after leading the Aggies to a 3-0 record and the tournament championship title last Thursday and Friday in San Antonio.
Sawatzky recorded A&M’s first triple-double of the season and the third of her career with 10 kills, 48 assists and a career-high 16 digs against UTSA in the championship match. The team captain hit .341 in the tournament, averaging 1.73 kills per set while also dishing out 10.36 assists per set. In addition, Sawatzky was second on the team with 3.00 digs per set throughout the tournament.
Lowak posted double-figure kills in all three matches and led the Aggies with 4.60 points and 4.20 kills per set, including a career-high 21 kills in the 3-1 victory against Loyola Marymount.
Patrick joined Sawatzky in receiving all-tournament accolades for the second consecutive week after averaging 3.89 kills per set while hitting .333. In the championship match, the Austin native tallied a team-high and a career-high 21 kills to help lead A&M to the 3-1 victory against the host Roadrunners.
The Aggies (5-1) are riding a four-match winning streak entering their home season debut Thursday at 10:30 a.m. against Siena in the opener of the Texas A&M Invitational at Reed Arena. The first 100 students at the match will receive free donuts and orange juice. In addition, two tickets for First Yell will be given away during the match against the Saints.
A&M returns to the court at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to face 16th-ranked Florida State, an NCAA Final Four team in 2011. On Friday, A&M takes on No. 7 Michigan at 7 p.m. The Wolverines were a Final Four team last year, falling to eventual champion Texas, 3-2, in a semifinal match.
