COLLEGE STATION- Texas A&M defeated Oklahoma City 103-60 in its only exhibition game of the 2013-14 season, on Sunday evening at Reed Arena. The Aggies had six players reach double figures.
Karla Gilbert led the Aggies with 18 points and eight rebounds. Gilbert was one of six Aggies that would have set a career-high in points this game if not for the game’s exhibition status.
Achiri Ade impressed in her first senior college action, scoring 16 points and adding in seven rebounds. The Aggies other junior college transfer, Tavarsha Scott-Williams, came off the bench to score 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
Jordan Jones had 11 points, five rebounds and a team-leading seven assists. Courtney Williams added six assists to go with 10 points. Courtney Walker had six rebounds to go with her 10 points.
The No. 16 Aggies came out of the gates strong with a 9-0 run the first 3:01 of the game, with five points from Courtney Williams in that stretch, and extended its lead to 17-4 before five minutes of the season had elapsed. Texas A&M, paced by 14 points from Achiri Ade, took a 53-31 lead into the break.
Texas A&M opened the second half on an 18-2 run, opening a 71-33 lead before Oklahoma City made a second-half field goal, before eventually cruising to a 103-60 victory.
The Aggies return to action on Nov. 11 when they head to The Super Pit in Denton, Texas to face North Texas in the regular season opener. Texas A&M returns home on Nov. 13 to host Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m.
Sophomore Point Guard Jordan Jones
On role on the team
“I feel like my role this year is to play pressure defense and get the team involved. On offense I feel like I have proven myself to be a consistent score-er. Coach trusts me more to come off the screens and taking shots, he trusts me with the ball in my had a lot more, but he trusts me to score as well.”
On Texas A&M's offense
“We really practiced the one series coming off the screens looking for the turn back to the four player off the dribble. Coach really wants us to work Karla and Achiri more. They had a mismatch because Achiri is quick with the ball and Karla has the size to finish. If I consistently hit the jumper then they are going to have to respect that and I can get into the paint a lot more. Its going to open up the floor for our team offensively.”
On transition of losing seniors
“We are still transitioning. Our team didn’t execute as well as we did last year. We have a lot of new people coming in so we have to work in practice on our transition offense and our half court offense. I feel like once the season comes along we will be more fluid. You will see basically what you saw last year if not better.”
Senior Center Karla Gilbert
On Texas A&M's inside game
“I don’t want to talk about just my game. I will talk about all the posts in general because we all did a very good job today. In practice we have been working on being tough. Size doesn’t necessarily matter because the fouls are still there and everybody is trying to do what they can do to hold us. I think we did really well on finishing and going up strong with the boards and on our shots. I’m just proud of our team I think we did a very good job today.”
On moving forward
“We need to focus on how to get back on transition defense with a purpose. We are getting back there but we are not doing the things we need to do to stop the ball.”
Head Coach Gary Blair
“We are definitely different at the point guard position with Jordan [Jones] and Curtyce [Knox] out there. I tried to balance out their time. We are going to have to use them both, particularly with the new rules. We had 51 free throws. I have to get my wings in better shape because they have to run the floor better. We are doing a good job of getting the rebounds with our fours and fives, but I need to get my wings out in transition and Jordan will get the ball to them.”
“It’s because of the touch rule, the post play, and the charge rule, plus the ten second back court which we’ve never had in women’s ball. There are a lot of adjustments that we have to do. One thing we did press but we couldn’t find our man. I think overall with as many people that we played; we got every player in double figure minutes and nobody played more than 24. I wish their 6’3” player could have played. She would have been a difference inside to see what we can do.”
On new players
“Where Achiri was scoring was on transition, she is very quick on scoring because she knows she doesn’t have the size. I was pleased with Scott. This was her first game to play in front of her parents and she still got lost on defense. On offense she had 15 points in 12 minutes. That’s what I saw in her when she played in junior college. No one played as harder on the court than she did. Once we teach her the scheme and she learns our offensive plays I think we will have a great tandem with Achiri and her.”
On moving forward
“We’ve got to work on transition defense. They had too many open shots. Even though they were missing them in the second half. We are going to face better division one teams and if we give up those looks we are not going to be in good shape. We have eight days before we play North Texas and hopefully we will be healthy and full throttle ready to go.”
