COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M’s Rutuja Bhosale (pronounced roo-too-ja bo-slay) has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week for women’s tennis, the Southeastern Conference office announced today.
In A&M’s only match last week, Bhosale went a combined 2-0 in doubles and singles while helping the Aggies defeat No. 15 Baylor, 4-3. It was the third victory against a top-20 opponent for the Aggies, who improved to 6-2.
From Shrirampur, India, Bhosale improved to 2-0 in doubles with partner Anna Mamalat as the pair jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Ema Burgic and Kiah Generette en route to an 8-1 victory at the No. 3 line, and the Aggies went on to capture the crucial doubles point.
In singles, Bhosale was first off the court and gave the Aggies a 2-0 lead as she easily defeated Megan Horter, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 6 court.
With the victories, Bhosale improved to 3-2 in singles and 4-3 in doubles in dual matches.
Bhosale and the Aggies open SEC play Friday as ninth-ranked Texas A&M takes on No. 5 Florida in Gainesville. The match begins at 4 p.m. (CT) and can be seen on ESPN3 and WatchESPN.
